What is Bowen Therapy and what can it do for your horse?

Most people have heard the term ‘Bowen Therapy’, but what is it and how does it actually work?

What is it?
Bowen Therapy is a very gentle therapy that involves light rolling motions over specific areas of the body.  This makes it ideal for sensitive or sore horses!  I cannot tell you how many people have told me that their horse can be aggressive to therapists only to have the horse drift off to sleep during treatment.

How does it work?
The rolling movements manipulate the fascia which is the connective tissue that surrounds all muscles in the body.  The connective tissue is one giant ‘thing’, kind of like a onesie, so when you manipulate one area it effects the entire body, not just the area you are working on.  By doing so you achieve several things:

  1. By stretching the fascia, it causes fluid in the body to return to the area aiding suppleness and flexibility.
  2. It triggers the lymphatic system which is how toxins are moved out of the body.
  3. It enhances the circulatory system so blood moves through the body faster and cells start to repair.

So what will it help your horse with?
So much!  But here are a few of the most common:

  • Straightness and flexibility
  • Muscle tension or soreness
  • Stiffness on one rein
  • Disunited gaits or reluctance to transition between gaits
  • Poll and back sensitivity
  • Toxin build up from grass
  • Uneven muscle development
  • Difficulty picking up feet for the farrier
